KILINOCHCHI TROOPS RENOVATED IRRIGATION CANALS FOR CULTIVATION

Major water canals of Thenniyankulam Tank, which covered with bushy vegetation was re-cleared and brought to its former capacity by the Army troops in 65 Division in order to irrigate a wide patch of paddy-fields while enabling a number of farming families to continue with their livelihoods.

 

History of this village tank runs to the ancient king I Gajabahu era during which the whole Thenniyankulam prospered under paddy cultivation. After gaining independence, the then government in 1964 settled people there and established farming colonies, irrigated by this Thenniyankulam tank with the support of administrative and agricultural authorities of the government. More than 200 families use this tank for their amenities and farming purposes.

 

The Thenniyankulam tank when it is filled in full capacity is now able to irrigate 700 acres down village.  One of its major canals is running along nearly 6.5 KM while other canal is running along 5.5 KM.

 

As per the concept of Major General Sarath Weerawardena RSP USP IG General Officer Commanding – 65 Division, more than 1000 troops from under command battalions of 651,652 and 653 Brigades actively engage with this shramadana campaign with more than 200 civilians. It depicted the communal friendship between civilians and military in the area. Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana USP ndc Commander, Security Forces- Kilinochchi graced this charity occasion as chief invitee.
