As per the direction of General Officer Commanding Major General Sarath Weerawardhana RSP USP IG, Groups of soldiers at 15 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (Volunteer) serving the 651 Brigade under the 65 Division rose to the occasion and rushed to assist the affected people during the cyclone in Thewampiddi and Pudukkadu villages in the Mallavi Divisional Secretariat area on 22 December 2017.

Inclement weather and cyclonic winds that affected those villages have destroyed the roofs more than 15 houses and rendered over 74 people homeless, compelling them to move out of their houses. At present, number of 32 troops is engaged in reconstructing 2 completely destroyed and 13 partially damaged houses of those civilians with the support received from others.

Realizing the importance of the situation, troops supplied roofing tiles and corrugated tin sheets locally for Army renovation work. Similarly, troops have provided temporary canopies available to the Army for temporary housing necessitate in case of an emergency.

Meanwhile, 25 troops of 7 Sri Lanka National Guard in 652 Brigade, provided their workforce to clear and renovate both side of the bund of Akkarayankulam – Gonavil irrigation canal. The shramadana campaign was organized under the direction of Commander 652 Brigade Colonel Lankeshwara Mahinkanda.
